Coral Springs Homicide Lawyer

The City of Coral Springs is located in Broward County about twenty miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale with a population of about 125,000 as of the taking of the last census. The city lies on an area of about sixteen square miles and saw rapid growth during the last half of the twentieth century.

Fifty years ago Coral Springs, Florida was basically marshy swampland. In fact if you walked through the town in the late 1960’s you’d probably see more cows than people.

But the city saw rapid growth in the 70’s, 80, and 90’s becoming well populated moving into the twenty-first century.

Michael B. Cohen, Esq. is a Coral Springs Homicide Attorney whose Broward County Office is located about twenty minutes from the center of the community. His law practice serves all of Broward, Dade and Palm Beach Counties.

The Coral Springs Police Department is located at 2801 Coral Springs Drive and their Website can be visited by clicking here. Their phone number is 954.344.1800 but in the case of any emergency requiring a swift response by the police you should always call 911.

Criminal and Civil Court records for Coral Springs, as well as all other areas of Broward County can be found through the Broward County Clerk of Courts. Arrest and inmate record searches can be found on the Internet by clicking here.

The city is known for having low violent crime statistics so many of its residents were shocked when a man unloaded his gun through the front door of his estranged wife Katherine’s Coral Springs apartment.

Double Attempted Murder in Coral Springs
The story hit the headlines in 2012 when Thomas Maffei, a retired U.S. Air Force officer tried to force his way into the apartment with his then estranged wife, her father and the couple’s 4-year-old son inside.

When she refused to let him in, he blindly discharged his gun three times into the center of the apartment door before he broke through, initiating a night of terror according to his now ex-wife’s testimony.

Once Maffei entered the residence he started walking through it appearing to be looking for something as his Katherine, terrified and bleeding walked outside on the phone with a 911 operator; frantically telling her what was happening.

She told the dispatcher she thought she was dying as her father and son both also exited the premises and fell to the ground beside her. Katherine’s father Robert Ranta was also hit by the gunfire.

When police arrived at the scene, they arrested Mr. Maffei on two counts of first-degree attempted murder, armed burglary, false imprisonment, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse.

Katherine and her father were taken to Broward Health North, where they were listed in serious condition. Their condition was upgraded to stable a few days after their admission to the hospital.

The case went to trial in September, 2016 and due to a technical issue the judge abruptly declared a mistrial.

Charges were refiled and the case again went to trial in February of this year (2017).

Maffei’s lawyers were depending on a defense of expert witnesses who testified that their client had already been diagnosed with PTSD, panic disorder major depression and insomnia. The Psychiatrist who testified for the defense also relayed to the jury that Maffei was on a cocktail of drugs the day of the shootings.
